Job Summary

The Affiliate Accounting Manager oversees various levels of professional accountants and financial analysts for work of considerable technical difficulty in support of various Thrivent Affiliated legal entities. This critical leadership role will manage accounting and FP&A activities for specialized, complex and/or functional areas requiring subject matter expertise and professional application of accounting principles, practices, and techniques in accordance with industry standards, current laws, and in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Collaboration, partnership and active stakeholder management with Affiliate business and finance leadership and staff in performing duties, while also working independently under broad direction, is critical to success in this role.

Job Responsibilities and Duties

  • Build and maintain a high-performing team; select, develop, coach, reward and recognize staff of various levels to deliver accounting and FP&A services and grow professionally.
  • Provide leadership to assure timely and accurate production of accounting and finance information, proper accounting controls are in place to protect integrity of information, and to create new accounting and/or finance processes when necessary.
  • Research and evaluate pertinent professional and authoritative literature to establish and/or recommend changes to accounting procedures and operations.  Monitor regulatory changes, assesses impact of such changes, and respond appropriately.
  • Prepare and/or direct the preparation of special reports, detailed accounting and finance information, or analyses of a complex and difficult nature for management.
  • Review and approve regulatory reporting.
  • Manage projects within division and/or participate on corporate project leadership teams.
  • Provide internal/external training/education both verbally and in writing on accounting systems, procedures, and practices.
  • Coordinate and manage internal and external audits, other regulatory exams, and financial control requirements for the Affiliates.
  • Active involvement and ability to create strong relationships with Affiliate business leaders and accounting and FP&A staff to provide valuable finance expertise and decision support.
  • Review account reconciliations prepared by accounting staff for accuracy and completeness in line with internal policy requirements.
  • Provide oversight of financial results prepared by staff including profitability, revenue and expense trends, cash flow requirements, trend changes and variances to budget and prior year.
  • Create presentations for management and boards of directors.
  • Provide accounting leadership for M&A activities as the Affiliate space grows and evolves.

Job Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required; advanced degree in finance or professional designation (CPA, CMA, MBA) strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years professional accounting experience required.
  • High level GAAP accounting experience or public accounting experience preferred.
  • 1-2 years managerial experience preferred.
  • Series 27 FINRA license required or obtained within 6 months of hire to support regulated broker dealer Affiliate.

  • Ability to be successful in a fast-paced environment where day to day responsibilities will be changing and evolving.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of management and employees.
  • In-depth knowledge of accounting principles, or tax statutes and regulations theory and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, understand and explain highly complex accounting concepts and financial control principals and provide recommendations to business and finance leaders.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and ability to creatively analyze data, collaborate with business partners and coworkers and proactively seek out information on emerging issues or best practices.
  • Process improvement mindset with an ability to plan, organize, and multi-task to meet competing deadlines.

Additional Information

  • This position allows a flexible work arrangement meaning you may work on-site and/or remotely from the Minneapolis, MN or Appleton, WI area.  This role will work in-office based on the needs of each specific week.
