Description

Develop and implement DC-based strategy to increase and strengthen Thrivent’s relationships and positions with Members of the US House and US Senate as well as administration officials. Engage on policy issues before members of Congress and their staffs on key committees and issues of importance to Thrivent. Regularly consult with internal subject matter experts and Thrivent leadership to ensure alignment on positions and prioritization. Lead development of Thrivent’s public policy positions and effectively advocate for those positions with key constituencies. Closely monitor federal legislative and administrative developments and communicate regularly with company leaders on these developments. Represent Thrivent and effectively communicate Thrivent’s point of view among various federal trade associations.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with VP to organize and develop Thrivent DC-based Government Affairs office
  • Design plans for government outreach and thought leadership by providing analysis of emerging or existing legislative public policy issues impacting Thrivent
  • Able to independently act on behalf of Thrivent concerning all political and reputational matters affecting the company; to communicate with and counsel all levels of the company - including senior management.
  • Increase Thrivent’s visibility and presence on Capitol Hill and with the Administration
  • Collaborate internally with relevant stakeholders and network with key experts within Thrivent to ensure understanding of Thrivent’s positions and objectives
  • Advise internal stakeholders, including senior leadership, on the impact of public policy, issues, and matters under negotiation as well as the political reality involved
  • Gather intelligence and assist in the preparation of position papers, policy briefings, presentations, and other materials related to government actions
  • Anticipate and guard against new or developing political or reputational risks facing the company. Provide proactive advice, guidance and strategy regarding political and reputational matters as assigned
  • Help grow PAC membership and contributions, and develop contribution strategies for federal candidates in partnership with rest of Government Affairs team
  • To the extent applicable, provide management and leadership of staff, including performance management, work flow management and career development

Required Job Qualifications

  • Required education level, experience, licensing/registration and/or credentials
  • Juris Doctorate preferred but not required.
  • 6+ years of relevant, high-quality government experience, preferably in the financial services area.
  • Strong relationships on the Hill and with key players in various administrations. Ability to work in a bipartisan environment.
  • Financial regulatory experience (insurance &/or securities preferred).
  • Strong working knowledge of the political fundraising world.

  • Ability to learn, master and teach new issues to business leaders and colleagues.
  • Strong writing, public speaking, and written communication skills.

The applicable salary or hourly wage range for this full-time role is $158,271.00 - $214,132.00 per year, which factors in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will be determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to, location, relevant experience, skills, and knowledge, business needs, market demand, and other factors Thrivent deems important.
