Thrivent's Actuarial Path

An immersive 12-week, summer internship followed by the opportunity to be selected for our full-time actuarial rotational program.

The Actuarial Path begins with your summer internship where you’ll work on real business projects that directly impact Thrivent.

You’ll take what you’ve learned in school and apply it to building risk models, analyzing product performance, and contributing to financial strategies. This hands-on experience helps you understand how your work connects to the bigger picture at Thrivent. Beyond the technical tasks, you’ll also develop storytelling skills – learning how to present your findings to senior actuaries and contribute to strategic decisions.

Successfully completing your internship sets you up for the opportunity to be selected for a full-time role in our structured rotational program.

During the actuarial rotational program, you’ll gain experience across product development, corporate actuarial, and asset/liability management – giving you a well-rounded foundation to grow your career at Thrivent. This phase includes dedicated exam support including study time during work hours, covering your exam fees and study materials to keep you on track for your actuarial certifications. (Fun fact: Our program has an 80%+ exam pass rate.)

Summer Internship Experience

Our actuarial internship is a paid, 12-week long immersive program that gives you the experience, insights, and projects needed to successfully transition into a full-time role. From a dedicated 1:1 mentor that’s coaching and invested in your growth, to the thriving intern community that’s providing weekly social and networking events, our goal is your success.

Your development continues with the support from our team of over 60 actuaries, many who started at Thrivent as an intern. Whether that means engaging directly with senior leadership to understand how decisions are made or meeting with a peer about career development, your long-term success at Thrivent is front and center.

Previous Intern Project: Single Premium Immediate Annuity Competitive Analysis

Analyze the competitiveness of our SPIA product to determine what, if any, changes are necessary to improve the product offering for our customers.

Yourindependence

Previous Intern Project: Accelerated Underwriting Deep Dive

Build a monitoring process to evaluate the performance of Thrivent’s accelerated underwriting program. Conduct protective value studies on new underwriting requirements to determine if they should be added to Thrivent’s underwriting program.

Support

Previous Intern Project: Low Interest Rate Analysis

Determine how many years in the future the strain to company earnings from sustained low interest rates will start to improve as older business that matures is slowly replaced with new sales. Determine the critical assumptions in estimating and understanding this relationship.

Giveadvice

Previous Intern Project: Variable Annuity Rider Fee and Hedging Analysis

Analyze the impact of the Variable Annuity Guaranteed Living Withdrawal Benefit rider fee, in relation to the embedded option Market Consistent Value, on hedged and unhedged profitability outcomes and hedging tradeoffs.

Rotational Program

Successfully completing your internship sets you up for the opportunity to be selected for a full-time role in our structured rotational program. This program focuses on you gaining experience in all three of our actuarial areas. Your rotational program gives you the experience to understand the big picture and learn what parts you like (and don't). We offer growth and exposure opportunities like meeting with actuarial leaders at Thrivent once every 6-months, presentations to the full actuarial group, etc.
